BMW Sauber fulfil their promise BMW Sauber’s 2008 target was to score their first Grand Prix win and on Sunday in Montreal they achieved it in style, Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld recording an emphatic one-two victory for the German-Swiss team. The result, which also saw Red Bull back on the podium, came at the end of an afternoon packed with incidents, most notably Lewis Hamilton’s pit-lane blunder, which put both his McLaren and Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari out of the race…
BMW Sauber Robert Kubica, 1m 17.539s, P1 Nick Heidfeld, 1m 17.430s, P2 Kubica kept Raikkonen at bay going into Turn One at the start, but could not keep up initially with Hamilton as his tyre pressures were not right and lost him grip. His second set of tyres was much better and he was able to drive ‘several qualifying laps’ once he had fought clear of all the single-stoppers who held him up after the safety car intervention. With a faster two-stop strategy it was clear he had to pass Heidfeld, and the German admitted that he didn’t make it hard for the Pole to do that. Heidfeld was very quick on the soft tyres in the opening stages, and set the race’s second fastest lap. BMW Sauber’s superb one-two netted them 18 points and thrust them back ahead of McLaren in the constructors’ championship, only three points adrift of leaders Ferrari. Theirs was a massively popular victory.VA
Hamilton plays it to perfection

After McLaren’s whitewash in Monte Carlo last season, few were predicting a Ferrari victory in this year’s race. However, all that changed after the red cars locked out the front row on Saturday. What no one could have predicted, however, was how just how unpredictable Sunday’s race would be.
On a day when it all went wrong for Ferrari, with both team and drivers admitting mistakes, McLaren made the best judgement calls. That, allied to some stunningly consistent pace from Lewis Hamilton, was enough to put the Briton back in charge of the championship standings…
McLaren Lewis Hamilton, 1m 18.510s, P1 Heikki Kovalainen, 1m 17.282s, P8 It all seemed over for Hamilton after he punctured his right rear tyre after hitting the wall exiting Tabac on the sixth lap, but McLaren switched to a one-stop strategy and got him going quickly enough that he only dropped to fifth. He passed Alonso and Raikkonen when both made early stops, then outran Kubica and Massa and was thus able to refuel on lap 54 and stay in the lead. The final safety car could have ruined it for him, but he kept his head for a brilliant triumph which he described as the highlight of his career. Kovalainen’s car wouldn’t engage a gear at the start of the formation lap so he had to start from the pit lane with a new steering wheel. When he got a clear road he flew, but eighth and the final point was the best he could muster on another unlucky day.VA

F1inschools Challenge 2008 Results
F1 in Schools has moved into top gear as it prepares for the 2008 World Championships to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in just one month’s time. School children from 17 countries across the world have battled their way through regional and national finals, and competed against over 7 million students, to win the chance to represent their countries in the fourth annual World Championships.
Over three days of enthralling competition (18th-20th March 2008), 25 teams will pit their miniature F1 cars against each other along a 20-metre two lane track. Last year’s winners, Team Fuga from Northern Ireland stole the show when they set a new world record of 1.020 seconds to edge closer to the elusive one second barrier.
In 2007, the World Champions were Team Fuga, from Northern Ireland. They set a new world speed record of 1.020 seconds down the 20-metre race track, at a scale speed of over 220 mph per hour and will return next month to defend their title. The runners-up were the all-girl trio from Scotland, Team Lightning, followed by another all-girl team in third place, Mercurial Ace from Malaysia. The world record set in 2006 by Malaysia was broken no less than nine times over the four days!
